Remember Martin Cooper? - Part 2

Apr 15, 2013 by Adrian

The competition with Bell Labs

Martin Cooper speaking on phoneThe first call that Martin Cooper made was to his rival, Joel Engel from Bell Labs…

Motorola wasn’t the only company that pursued this dream, the engineers from Bell Labs were also trying to create such a device. But Martin Cooper was the first to create it, and the engineers from Bell Labs must have felt very awkward when they answered their telephone and on the other line was someone speaking from a device that they were trying to create…

What is Martin Cooper doing now?

If you thought that Martin Cooper invented the mobile phone, got the money and flew into the Bahamas for a 40 years holiday, well, you’re wrong. His contributions to the wireless field are very important and the company that he co-founded in 1992, Arraycomm, is the leader in smart antenna technology, with almost 400 patents. In the fall of 2013, he will receive the Marconi Prize, a prestigious trophy given to inventors who achieved important advances in the communication and information fields.

He has big dreams about what the future will look like, he sees the phone becoming an extension of the body, being able to detect diseases before they appear and informing the user how to prevent them… impressive, right?

His latest invention is a very simple phone, called Jitterbug. This phone was created especially for seniors and it has a very simple and intuitive menu, a generous battery life time of over 25 days in stand-by and a nice procedure of uploading the captured images to Facebook, Picasa or Shutterfly.

It seems that this man never stops inventing things, and at the age of 85 (and still counting) he remains one of the most impressive inventors of 20th and 21st century.

The impact

It’s not hard to estimate the impact of Martin Cooper’s invention in today’s culture, everything seems to spin around these small boxes that we call smartphones. We wouldn’t have today the Android phones that can do 1001 things, if this man hadn't created the mobile phone that was able to do 3 things.

I wonder how our world would look like without mobile phones, maybe you can share with us your vision of a 21st century without them…

Don't forget about Remember Martin Cooper? - Part 1 - enjoy! :)
