Getting to know Yammer

Yammer was launched in 2008 as a freemium enterprise social network service and it was sold to Microsoft in 2012 for $1.2 billion dollars. Before it got sold, in 2010, the service was used by more than three million users and 80,000 companies worldwide. During this period, Yammer 2.0 was launched and it was quickly described as a "Facebook for business" by most users. Nowadays, Yammer is used in more than 200,000 companies around the world.

Yammer is regarded as a social network that’s entirely focused on your business. An user who wants to join your business’s Yammer network must have a working email address from your company’s domain. However, an external network can also be created in order to allow non-employees to communicate with your company. This comes as a plus when your company communicates on a daily basis with suppliers and customers for example.

How much does it cost?

Yammer was designed as a freemium social network and Microsoft kept this market strategy until today. As almost all its other products, Microsoft sells Yammer both separately or within a business plan of the Office Suite. Besides the "Basic Network", Microsoft also offers users the "Enterprise Network" for $3 per user / month with Admin Tools, Services and Support and other interesting tools.

As previously mentioned, the Yammer product can be purchased with the business plans: Office 365 Enterprise E1, Enterprise E3, or it can be purchased along with the Share Point product.

Yammer and Facebook

Yammer User InterfaceIf you ask anybody about the similarities between Yammer and Facebook, they will say that Yammer is a copycat. I also concur with this!

The bright side is that, as users are already familiar with Facebook, they'll get along just fine with Yammer interface. This is definitely a good think considering that users are happy to work with an interface that is simple and already familiar, putting this act of plagiarism in a good light.

As mentioned above, Microsoft kept the freemium business model because it depends on voluntary user adoption in order to be successful. It is believed that employees must voluntarily use social business software and first prove its value in daily tasks before the company should pay for it, and not the other way around.

All in all, Yammer is a good solution for companies around the world, especially corporate. As Yammer stated, it is so user friendly that it has determined employees to reduce their email traffic with ~40%. Which is pretty damn cool when you think that the basic communication inside and outside the companies is made via emails.
